I have also been to Russia twice in the last 12 months to meet with them, and two of them have been to visit me in Stockholm. (I sponsored their visas). However I certainly agree with you.... that it pays to be careful and learn how to recognize scammers.

# 'girl' writes to you first on a dating site (or an email appears out of nowhere in your mailbox). Real Russian girls are rarely so bold as to write to you first. (unless you're very attractive or rich :). Plus if they're looking for a partner, they generally prefer him to be Russian speaking and live in Russia. much more convenient.
# girl's much too young for you (or too good to be true/looks like a model/porno star)
# girl has some far-fetched excuses for you not visiting her in Russia (criminal city, not Russian custom etc). Actually, the normal way to meet a Russian girl is to visit her in her city first.
# scammers rarely have children, but all the real Russian women I've ever met on the net did.
# photos are too revealing (can't be a respectable girl)
# most of the pics are old and a little bit faded. Most scam photos have a curiously grainy quality that soon becomes easy to recognise. A serious girl who's looking for a partner, would save up and go to a professional to have a photo set done, and/or borrow a digicam at least (dates should also be on the photos you receive). Russian girls aren't all that poor anymore.
# girl claims not to have a mobile phone. Very unlikely!!! even poor girls can't do without a mobile phone, they're much cheaper than in Europe and a megafon telephone card doesn't cost that much either. On the other hand, not having a landline or a computer is quite common.
# very long rambling/ecstatic form letters with a strange format, punctation and layout written in scamlish. (world's worst Babelfish copy)
# writes everyday in English (how does she have time if she's working? + most Russians can hardly speak a word of English). Anyway, what's the point of finding a girl if you can't communicate with her, at least on a basic level?
# doesn't answer direct questions (sometimes factual mistakes in the letter)
# falls in love very quickly. Don't let your ego or loneliness pull the wool over your eyes. You could be an axe murderer for all she knows.
# wants money for a 'visa' and/or maybe tickets, even though she needs a personal letter of invitation from you, a copy of your passport, a proof of your residence in your home country, a completed sponsor's application form (also from you)....not including the documents that she has to fill in herself. All of these she has to drop off at your national embassy in Moscow WITH PREPAID TICKETS and wait 10 working days. Without these documents, it's impossible for 'her' to get a sponsored Schengen visa. USA and Canada is almost as complicated. And normal tourist visas + travel costs would set her back 2000+ US dollars. She should be asking you for a lot of money! Why should it be so easy for a gorgeous sexy girl just to jump on a plane and fall into bed with you? Be realistic.
NB...you should check your national embassy website in Moscow for visa prices and procedures.
# uses a proxy server to hide his/her location, ie a SOCKS server / GPRS Internet. if you can't trace 'her' IP, it's 100% scam. If she uses gmail, be suspicious too cos u won't be able to trace the IP. Hotmail and yahoo are acceptable if she'll chat with you on messenger, otherwise why does she have a non-cyrillic email account?

I'll give my views for what it's worth.

1) A large number of posters find this site by googling. They arrive with varying degrees of computer expertise. I for one, thought since a scammer beheads, header = scammer. But after repeatedly seeing posts asking for header, I now know better.

2) Reading a post is one thing, understanding, altogether different. This because English is a difficult language, I don't see it getting easier any time soon.

3) I may be walking over a buried treasure without knowing it even exists, never mind how to find it. Google for example promotes ''Search, don't Sort''. How is a rewly arrived reader supposed to know, that he must search for a data, that might possibly exist in a different thread?

4) It's only the first step that is difficult - i.e., after a first time post, it takes only a matter of seconds to copy and repost, or just hyperlink to the post. If Skeet had given up on repeatedly seeking headers, I would not been able to post how to find it for some e-mail software. If Eddie had given up repeatedly posting on Schengen visa, I might have asked if Luxumbourgh is Schengen-friendly.

5) I think it's Skeet who said it's impossible to teach someone unwilling to learn. Taking it a step further, the regulars should not make an assumption that most newbies are unwilling to learn. Some learn, and acknowledge the source, despite poor memory (My friends say I have 640K of volatile RAM).

6) Always give the first-time benefit of doubt to a new arrival. i.e. by reposting, he'll read, return to post additional info. I lost count of how many times newbies have profusely expressed their thanks, ''God Bless You'' etc., because they readily found something under their post, most likely a re-post by a tireless individual, who doesn't even expect expression of gratitude, but only wants to see a few saved bucks, quids, chips etc.

7) Most of my views pertain to posting material on informing newbies on computer possibilities; I'm not qualified to help a newbie on attitudes, responsibilites, etc. I terribly lack the temperement and language skills here.

More old-be's should be grateful for the fact that this discussion is going on in Holland now too. On a similar forum. A year ago The Netherlands had hardly heard of the Russian Scam. The Nigerian 419-er, yes. But this? So please... Take a look at the links whenever you have some spare time! Okay? D.
