SOME GENERAL INFO ABOUT RUSSIAN GIRLS, AND HOW TO SPOT RUSSIAN DATING SCAMMERS:

The vast majority of Russian dating scammers are not women at all, but actually men, mostly working in small gangs in or around Yoshkar Ola, in Mari El republic, sometimes in Chuvashia. It's virtually guaranteed that the girls in these scam pics aren't involved because the scammers steal their pics from the internet or pay unsuspecting friends for them, or buy and exchange them on scammer websites. (Once a scammer even admitted to me that he stole all his pics from army-of-brides.com and mamba.ru ).

Most scammers are VERY lazy and looking for quick cash. They use email extractor programs to get your mail addresses (if you don't have a profile on a dating site, that is)...
http://www.webextractor.com/
and copied form mails and spam programs on automatic reply, very often the BAT!, which can personalize small parts of each letter.
http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/

They mostly won't read your letters until after the money letter because they don't have time, ie because they're scamming, or trying to scam, as many guys as they can (economies of scale).....and also because they're semi-literate losers who can't speak much English anyway. IN OTHER WORDS, you can write any crap in your replies and they won't react, they're only interested when they're curious to know if you've taken the bait after the money letter. A girl is only involved either occasionally to phone a guy up, especially if he's suspicious, or to pick up the loot at Western Union, with a false ID of course!

More recently, the majority of Russian scammers have started using proxy servers or forged IPs to hide their locations so ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO DO IS TRACE THEIR IP ADDRESS!

If, by any chance, you don't believe any of this, please read: http://www.cheboksaryrussia.net/russian-scams/russian-scammers.html

So....if several or more of the following scam signs apply to your Boris (the beautiful Russian 'girl' that is supposedly writing to you), resist the temptation to help 'the poor girl' by sending her money. You're really writing to a sleazy Russian guy sitting in a smoky room in Yoshkar Ola, with a bunch of other sleazy guys spamming indiscriminately on laptops .

  • 'girl' writes to you first on a dating site...especially a free one (or an email appears out of nowhere in your mailbox). Real Russian girls are rarely so bold as to write to you first. (unless you're obviously very attractive or rich :))) They will often reply to your mails, but rarely take the initiative. It's the man who does the chasing in Russia. Plus, if they're looking for a partner, they generally prefer him to be Russian speaking and live in Russia. Much more convenient!

  • doesn't answer direct questions (sometimes factual mistakes in the letter). Her replies should be exactly that...replies...however short they are.

  • girl's much too young for you (or too good to be true/looks like a model/porno star)....although I have noticed a recent tendency for some scammers to use photos of slightly 'less attractive' girls as well.

  • girl has some far-fetched excuses for you not visiting her in Russia (criminal city, not the Russian custom, terrorism, it's her dream to come to your country, etc). ALL BULLSHIT!! Actually, the normal way to meet a Russian girl is to visit her in her city first. Russian TV is full of documentaries about Russian girls who have emigrated and got murdered, abandoned, etcetc. They should usually want to meet you first before they gallivant off to your country.

  • scammers rarely have children, but most of the real Russian women I've ever met on the internet did (except for Moscow career girls). It's often the reason that they're looking for a partner.

  • photos are too revealing (can't be a respectable girl). Respectability is very important to most Russian women (especially Moscow career girls). They're hardly likely to send a half-naked photo to a virtual stranger on the internet. Think about it!

  • most of the pics are old and a little bit faded with a curiously grainy quality that soon becomes quite easy to recognise (overuse?). Again a scammer admitted to me that low-quality photos are a key factor in his scamming. I found this curious because a serious Russian girl who's looking for a partner very often saves up and goes to a professional to have a studio set done (often corny ones posing with a chair etc), and/or borrows a digicam at least (dates should also be on the photos you receive). My fiance did it. Russian girls aren't all that poor anymore, and if they seriously want to leave Russia, they know that posting cheap pics will only attract cheap guys.

  • GIRL CLAIMS NOT TO HAVE A MOBILE PHONE. Very unlikely!!! fer f***'s sake.....do you know a single girl without a mobile phone? Even poor Russian girls can't do without one, they're much cheaper than in Europe and a Megafon telephone card doesn't cost that much either. You should be able to call her whenever you want. On the other hand, not having a landline or a desktop/laptop is very common.

  • very long rambling/ecstatic form letters with a strange format, punctation and layout written in scamlish. (world's worst Babelfish translation)

  • writes long letters everyday in English. How does she have time to write those long letters if she's working? And if she doesn't have a job, how can she afford a computer + internet connection? Even Internet cafs are relatively expensive in Russia. Anyway, most Russians outside Moscow can hardly speak a word of English. (What's the point of finding a girl you can't communicate with, at least on a basic level?) PLUS.. if she can't speak English, why does she have a non-cyrillic email account like gmail or yahoo? Most real Russians use mail.ru, yandex.ru or inbox.ru....though hotmail and yahoo are acceptable if she'll chat with you on messenger (preferably with a webcam).

  • falls in 'love' very quickly. Don't let your ego, kind heart, loneliness or lust pull the wool over your eyes. She doesn't really know you. You could be an axe murderer for all she knows. As I mentioned, Russian TV is full of documentaries about Russian girls who have emigrated and got murdered, abandoned, etcetc.

  • uses a proxy server to hide his/her location, ie a SOCKS server / GPRS Internet. if you can't trace 'her' IP, it's 100% scam.
THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS TRACE HER IP ADDRESS. In fact, it's the only thing you need to do really.

MOST IMPORTANT...if you get this far:

  • she asks for money for a tourist 'visa' and/or maybe tickets, ignoring the fact that IT'S VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE, POOR RUSSIAN GIRL TO GET A TOURIST VISA TO A WESTERN COUNTRY!
Most Russian girls outside Moscow and St Petersburg are quite poor, and immigration control would consider them an overstay risk. They would never let be let into your country without a healthy bank account.

She can get a SPONSORED visa with your help, but then she needs a personal letter of invitation from you, a copy of your passport, a proof of your residence in your home country, a completed sponsor's application form (also from you)....not including the documents that she has to fill in herself. She also needs a job in Russia, a letter from her employer and insurance. All of these documents she has to drop off at your national embassy in Moscow WITH PREPAID TICKETS and wait about 10 working days. These are the rules for the Schengen countries anyway...the USA and Canada are almost as, if not more, complicated. Anyway, a normal TOURIST visa + travel costs + hotel rooms would set her back 2000+ US dollars for a trip to the US. She should be asking you for a lot of money! Why should it be so easy for a gorgeous sexy Russian girl just to jump on a plane and fall into bed with you? Anyway, no respectable Russian girl would ask directly for money, but might accept some if you insisted.

NB...you should check your national embassy website in Moscow for visa prices and procedures.
UK: http://www.ukvac-ru.com/document.aspx
USA: http://moscow.usembassy.gov/consular/consular.php?record_id=reqvdocs

There are many variations on the scams, some quite slight. Some scammers claim to have a visa already and need money for tickets, a last-minute medical examination, etcetc. Some claim that their mother needs an operation, etcetc. A few more patient and professional scammers will take months before they hit you with the money letter (though if you follow my tips, you should be able to spot the scammers before then). There are even a few real girls scamming, and professional gold-diggers (mostly in the Ukraine). One or two of them are very bold, and not even afraid to use their true identities. These scammers are harder to spot, and there is no easy way to identify them, all you can do is use your instincts and common sense, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

and, of course, a golden rule: DON'T SEND MONEY...unless you're 100% sure she's real.

Another ground rule: if you are looking for a Russian wife/partner, you must be prepared to travel to Russia to meet her. You also need to behave generously towards her; after all, you need to prove that you can support here (and her kids) if she migrates to your country. But if she turns out to be a professional gold-digger, which has never happened to me personally or anyone I know (but I know it does happen), you should try to be philosophical and treat it as an exotic trip to a foreign country, have fun anyway, and try not to waste too much money on her.

There are actually hundreds of perfectly nice Russian girls in Russia but you have to be prepared to go and get them. Chercher la femme. It certainly worked for me.

Almost all scammers are MEN regardless of whose pictures you receive. Ask yourself some questions.

1) Are you being asked money for visa ALONE? Put your wallet in a safe place and start your homework
2) Are you being asked for $XXX (3 digits)? - Replace the $ symbol with any currency and the XXX with any 3 digits or fewer - Get back to your homework
3) Who is going to Russia first? You or your money? - If it is the second one - back to homework
4) How far away is your travel agent? In your local phone book or Russia? - If it is the second one - back to homework

Americans - When applying for a foreign visa ensure you passport is valid for at least next 4 months. It takes about a month to get a visa (e.g. Argentina, Brazil, Russia). While awaiting a visa it may be risky to take a quick trip across to Canada or Mexico. When you re-enter US without a passport you might face an experience you might not want to re-live!

Suggestions for delighting a scammer
First - What NOT to send scammers - Don't lose heart yet, there's plenty you can entertain them with!

NEVER send scammers any link to delphi, as it undermines our efforts

Humor http://www.delphifa..086.shtml

Before the Grande Finale, while you are awaiting it - browse some Russian for the event
If your scammer e-dress has .by (Belarus) .kz (Kazakhstan) .ru (Russia) .ua (Ukraine) (or the dots after the two characters) his computer is Cyrillic-capable, and preferred when available.
ПОШЕЛ НА ХУЙ ТУПОЙ УРОД
Я ТВОЮ МАМУ ЕБАЛ
[Approximate meaning in Yoshkar-Ola]
BEGONE PERVERTED PRICK
I F***ED YOUR MUM

The rest is by Eddie from Sweden

ПОШЕЛ = пошел .. 'stupid, ugly creature' is not especially accurate. пошёл means the same as пошли, you say it when you are leaving. 'пошёл на ***' = 'get lost'.
ПОШЕЛ НА ХУЙ ТУПОЙ УРОД seems to be a standard phrase, but I'm not familiar with it.

ХУЙ = khuj = dick

ЕБАЛ = ебать ~ jebat' = to fuck

thus a direct translation would read:

GET LOST GONE ON DICK
I YOUR MUM FUCK

And after interpreting the syntax and vocabulary, as well as adding a little punctuation, I would say it means:

'Get lost you wanker.
Fuck you.'

Other useful Russian words/phrases

ёб твою мать ~ ëb tvoju mat' = 'fuck you'......Literally 'I have fucked your mother.' 'ëb' is an obsolete form of the past tense masculine singular. This is probably the most offensive term in Russian, but commonly used.

курите мою трубку ~ kurite moju trubku = Suck my dick! ....used in the same derogatory way as its counterpart in English.

мудозмон ~ mudozvon = bullshitter....the literal translation is 'the one who is chiming with his balls'

обоссаться можно ~ obossat's'a mozhno.....ironic expression that means 'So fucking what?' or literally 'I'm so excited I'm pissing my panties'

опесдол ~ opesdol = dumbass, muthafucka..... used to stress somebody's mental sickness

хохол ~ khokhol = a Ukrainian.....very insulting. It literally means 'greedy one'. (or 'foreskin')

ты мне ваньку не валяй ~ Ty mne van'ku ne val'aj = Don't pretend you are dumber than you really are......literally means 'Don't roll around like a Vanka.' ('Vanka' is the usual name given the village idiot in stories.) Can also mean 'Don't pretend you don't understand what I'm saying.'

ot'ebis'! = Fuck off!

лысого в кулаке гонять ~ lysogo v kulake gonyat' = to wank....literal translation is 'to run the bald guy through your fist'

задницу ~ zadnicu = asshole

бугор ~ bugor = the boss....used in the joint for the men who control the other inmates.

встать раком ~ vstat' rakom = to assume the doggy position. In other words 1) to assume the doggy position for sex; 2) To assume any unsuitable position, to be in an unpleasant situation.

жопа ~ z'opa = ass, arse, asshole (pron. Zho-pah)
Russian proverb: Na bezptichyu i zhopa sol/ove'y = any port is good in a storm.

хер с ним (ней) ~ kher s nim (nei) = to hell with it, I don't give a damn.

сука ~ suka = bitch

играть на кожаной флейте ~ igrat' na kozhano'i fle'ite = to suck someone's weiner (to play on a leather flute).

These I can't be bothered to transcribe to cyrillic:

mudack = dumbass....pronounced 'moo-duck' , commonly used like 'mo-fo' E.g. 'Poslushay ty, mudack' - 'Listen you, muthafucka'.

'Mne po khuy' means something like 'I don't give a fuck'.

pososi moyu konfetku = suck my 'candy'.

raz'yebuj = a slacker....literally a guy who fucks around, doing nothing useful.

zalupat' = to cheat, to talk bullshit.......For example if someone cheated you or asked too high a price at the market: Ty zalupnul!: 'you cheater!' (very strong)

When to send e-mails to scammers
When to send e-mail to scammers? http://www.google.c..-Ola&rls=. microsoft:en-
Substitue your scammer's IP city and to get your local offset in the google query box and enter

If you have prepared e-mails for them, save as drafts and wait till their time 2100 (9:00 PM) - At that time most everyone is less alert, more likely to make mistakes. It takes data 8 minutes travel time from North America to a Russian DSL receiver. About half that from Central Europe. Night shift scammers are less efficient. When you receive your first money letter, reply that you won't have the time to go to bank till Friday, in the mean time insisting on their more beautiful pix, and on Saturday after 1700 his time you will say you sent the (first - same for your future) moneygram. He will be waiting till next Monday morning for his bank visit while hopefully e-mailing about his sexual dreams, with you as the hero! When the first moneygram fouls up, before the second one insist on a copy of passport and clearly typed in a line by itself Passport number. He has to be hit by googlers text-searching for passport numbers, it is more efficient than picture searching. In your Grande Finale at the end of your e-mail copy paste the below Cyrillic text (= Approximately: Begone perverted faggot prick - I f***ed your mum)
ПОШЕЛ НА ХУЙ ТУПОЙ УРОД - Я ТВОЮ МАМУ ЕБАЛ
If he answers in Cyrillic, it will be provide you material for your next scammer in line. Remember preferred time 2100 hours can make the boss woovertime!

Hi New Zealand!

She/he have used Russian/English dictionary not in a proper way :-))). Her Ehglish is not so good or may be she/he uses robot to translate to automate scam business.
What she/he was trying to tell you is 'caress, fondle, cherish'. But in a dictionary first meaning of that russian word is 'to iron, press'.
Dont fall for scammer.
Sorry man.

Found this on a personal MySpaceblog. I think it's an accurate analysis of how the scam works. You can replace 'West-African' and 'Nigerian' by 'Russian' or Mari-El.

Romance Scams and how they work

A romance scam essentially occurs when strangers pretend romantic intentions, gain the affection of victims, and then use that goodwill to gain access to their victims' money and bank account or by getting them to commit financial fraud on their behalf.

Romance scams rely on creating strong emotional ties that by-pass logical thought and appeal strongly and exclusively on emotions. These feelings are triggered by using appealing photos, dream profiles on online dating sites, persuasive and flattering words, poetry and love song lyrics. The strategy is essentially to get victims to fall in love and lust so strongly that they want to be with the scammers by whatever means possible. The promise of marriage is very common in this con because they know that no one will refuse to do a small favour for their 'wife' or 'husband'. Marriage (or the promise of it) also increases the element of trust and the resulting mind control. The key motivator for the victim is love and romance. The motivation for the perpetrator in is greed.

Most of these scams originate from West Africa (especially Nigeria) although they are becoming increasingly common in Russia and Eastern Europe. Another emerging region is Thailand, the Philippines, or any other country where 'mail order brides' are available.

[edit] Stages and analysis

[edit] Grooming
The scammers target their victims by posting fake profiles on multiple dating sites. Anyone looking for love on the internet is at risk because scammers are known to target every sort of dating site including niche sites like religious, gay, professional, etc. They will target marks from any race, sexual orientation, nationality, age and location but prefer middle-aged men or women looking for long term relationships because they are more likely to have higher incomes, more assets and might be more desperate to attract a potential mate. In all cases however, all that the scammers are concerned about is that potential victims are willing and ready to open their hearts (and later, their wallets) to them. The insidious and callous nature of the perpetrators is exposed by discovering that there have been cases of wheelchair bound victims on disability allowance who have been conned by being led to believe that someone loves them deeply and wants to marry them. Although they target both men and women, almost all the scammers are actually men who pose as women in order to seduce their male victims. They are able to do this because there are typically more men than women who post profiles on dating sites and also because most of the communication is done via email and instant messaging. However, if and when they need to, the scammers will hire a female voice to talk to their male victims.

They tend to hide behind stolen photographs, normally of attractive professional models. The fraudsters will usually claim to be from the USA or the UK (if English) and other Western Europe countries for other languages. The introductory website might not take responsibility for screening out these fraudsters from their membership when it is reported. For example, Daddyhunt.com responds to reports of fraudsters with instructions to ignore them, but does not state that they will delete the fradulent profile or other wise protect their membership from becoming additional victims. The scammers claim to be going abroad or are already working abroad (mainly Nigeria) on some short-term project. Mostly, they will claim to be engineers, IT professionals, pilots, models or any other glamorous or high flying career. They use highly scripted profiles on the dating sites that are designed to be very smooth and alluring . It does not matter if the dating site is an 'exclusive' one that tries to keep out 'undesirables' by charging a high fee because the scammers will pay for membership using a stolen credit card. Should they spot a desperate sounding or naive profile, the scammers will create a 'tailor-made' profile designed to target that unsuspecting victim in particular. They seek to quickly establish contact and rapport and move their victims away from the moderated forums and chat rooms so that they can 'work' the victims. This goes progressively from email, instant messaging, telephone calls and finally web cam (especially important to verify that the victim is real). Bearing in mind that the photos that they posted are not really theirs, they will never reveal themselves on web cam and usually blame this on the dilapidated state of the internet in West Africa.

The scammers then set about establishing intimacy by using pet names and many times claim that fate or even a higher power has pre-ordained the romance. Almost always, they use free email services especially Yahoo or Hotmail. They quickly declare love and express a strong desire to be physically present with their victims. The scammers are very devoted and dote on their victims, sending romantic and flirtatious messages sometimes up to 20 times a day. They never give their victims an opportunity to forget them as they bombard them with plagiarized poetry and lyrics from romantic love songs. Many times they will send their victims romantic and thoughtful gifts such as flowers, candy, expensive chocolate, lingerie and even birthday presents for the victim's children, all purchased with stolen credit cards. The scammers (who commonly work in groups of up to six people) tend to be very good judges of character and know which buttons to push and will say things that make their victims fall very deeply in love. The grooming period typically lasts up to four months but it is not unheard of for victims to be prepared for 12 or more months. It all depends on the skill of the (team of) scammer(s) and the 'desperation' of the victim to find love. The grooming period ends when the scammer successfully proposes to his/her intended victim and the victim starts thinking of a wedding ceremony taking place in the foreseeable future. Victims are conned into believing this is the end of an often long quest to find happiness. The scammers are very good at building and exploiting their victims' dreams and ambitions and using these to ingratiate themselves. They are very supportive of their victims' dreams, whether settling down and raising a family or cycling across the Sahara desert or pursuing a career. Nothing is too much for the scammers who now appear to be perfect partners because they are so thoughtful, supportive and considerate. The victims cannot be convinced that their beloved is not the most wonderful, loving and supportive man/woman in the world. In the victim's mind, this is the end of an often long and frustrating quest to find love.

[edit] The scam kicks in
The extortion phase of the con begins once the perpetrator is certain that he can exercise a certain amount of mind control based on the feelings of love that he has established and nurtured. At this point, the scammer is still claiming to be abroad temporarily on an international job/assignment/project or assignment and cannot wait to finish it so that they can be together. Unfortunately, for a whole range of reasons, the scammer does not have sufficient cash to make the trip to be together with his/her partner. Many times, there is no request for direct financial assistance and all that the scammer requests is for his beloved to help overcome the problem by doing them a 'small favour' to help facilitate the trip. Key to the scam is the fact that the victim by this stage is ready to do anything to have their 'partner' by their side and the 'favour' is an innocent sounding request to cash a cheque/postal order for them. The scammers normally claim that these are work-related cheques that they haven't been able to cash due to the different banking system in Nigeria, but they can also take the form of 'someone owes me money' or 'a client wishes to pay me in dollars not local currency' variety. In all these scenarios the victim will receive what are in fact expertly forged or stolen cheques that will eventually get rejected by the issuing banks. Whatever the story, the scammer ensures that he scores brownie points by asking the victim to keep a share of the cheque for themselves. This not only reinforces the feelings of love and trust within the victim but also serves to incriminate the victim thereby reducing any chance of reporting to the authorities because in the eyes of the law the victim becomes an accomplice by keeping a portion of the stolen money. For example, the scammer may send the victim a forged or stolen cheque worth $4,000 and ask the victim to retain $800 for themselves and to forward the remaining $3,200 to Nigeria via a telegraphic money transfer service, usually Western Union or Moneygram. The scammers like to use these services because it is difficult to trace the recipients of the money.

The problem (for the scammer) with this method is that once the victim cashes the first cheque, the scammer is then in a race against the clock. This is because the bank is sure to get in touch with the victim to alert them about the stolen/forged cheques that they deposited. The banks will then often freeze the victims' accounts or demand immediate payment or threaten to involve the authorities. The scammer knows that the victim is unlikely to cash any more cheques once the lie is exposed and so they try to make the victim cash as many cheques as they can before the banks discover the bad cheques and start demanding repayment. The time period will depend on individual banks but generally varies between a few weeks to a few months. This is therefore a one-hit affair and the scammer expects to receive one or two large sums and then nothing at all after that. For this reason, some scammers prefer to have many small but frequent transfers spread over a longer time because they can make more money that way. These small(er) amounts of money are necessary in order to solve some minor problems that are standing in the way of the two lovers finally meeting up. The tales that the scammers spin are constantly evolving but some of the more common ones are listed below. A YouTuber even made a video depicting the scam live through a telephone conversation that received a high number of hits.[1]

[edit] Common variations
Apart from the more common methods previously discussed, other narratives used to extract money from the victims of romantic scams include the following:

The scammer falls seriously ill or is seriously injured in a car crash while in Nigeria and needs urgent medical attention. The victim is contacted by the scammer writing as a 'hospital administrator', who will inform the victim that have been listed as next of kin and, as such, must pay for medical treatment. Without this medical attention, the 'patient' is sure to die.
Scammers may simply ask their victims to 'lend' them the money to be able to purchase a plane ticket or to be able to cover departure tax, promising to repay the money. The scammer may claim that they have been mugged and/or have lost their wallets.
The scammer may claim to have an unpaid hotel bill and that they being held hostage by the hotel manager or their passports or other documents have been confiscated. The scammers will desperately plead for money to settle the hotel bill, promising to later repay the money.
Sometimes, the scammer will ask the victim to open a bank account in the victim's name or to cede control of an existing account so that the perpetrator can deposit a large cheque. The most common excuse is that the scammer wants to start a business to guarantee their future financial status but the authorities in Nigeria will not allow them to leave with the cheque. Again, the victim becomes a potential suspect in money laundering or an accomplice in criminal theft.
Scammers frequently ask their victims to reship goods for them to Nigeria. Many businesses in the world will not ship goods directly to Nigeria until full payment is received by their banks, and so a stolen credit card in the hands of a Nigerian scammer is virtually worthless. By using his victim's address (normally in the USA or Western Europe) he is able to order high value electronic goods, then arrange to have them shipped to Nigeria for resale. When the credit card company fails to honour the payment, the merchant pursues the victim for the goods or the money. The victim becomes responsible for the bill because the goods were delivered to their address.
Eastern European scammers tend to use the guise of mail order bride agencies to scam their victims. Like their Nigerian counterparts, the lady in question is incredibly attractive and a rapport is quickly established and the lady declares the victim to be her dream partner. Before long there is a desire to meet up to test 'compatibility' but the victim needs to pay for her passport, visa and ticket before she can come over to be with him. Needless to say, after giving the money, she will never materialise and the victim is left with an empty wallet and an aching heart.
Not a common variation of the scam - some scammers will ask their victims to take cash advances on their credit cards, then offer to pay off the balances for you, of course the victims are asked to give out credit-card and security information. The scammer will sometimes pay on the card, but not the entire balance, so the victim will accrue a very high interest rate on the remaining balance and advance.
Finally, the scammers purchase high-value goods off e-bay or similar services and have the victims pay for them by sending money to diverse locations throughout the world. In this way the scammer is able to receive high-value goods and erase a paper trail.

[edit] Outcomes
Whatever form the scam takes, scammers will keep trying to make as much money as they can until the victims cannot afford to send any more or until the victims realize that their 'spouse' will never come and that they are being conned. It is common then for the scammer to terminate the relationship. Many times however, it is the authorities knocking on their door (with threats of imprisonment) that alerts many victims to the fact that they have been taken in.

[edit] Size of the problem
Romance scams have become the natural successor of advance fee fraud activities, because many people in the West are much more aware of the typical 419 type scam; the returns are a lot better with romance scams which are relatively unknown and appeal to love and romance rather than greed. The romance scammers can make more money by skimming smaller amounts from thousands of victims rather than one large sum from very few victims. (So, instead of milking $30,000 from one victim in a 'normal' 419 scam, romance scammers find it much easier to make $1,500 from 20 victims.) The US State Department reported in 2004 that Nigerian email scams constituted the biggest consumer fraud threat on the Internet[citation needed].

As of 2004, there were 8.4 million fully paid subscribers to over 1,000 internet dating sites[citation needed]. In fact, 1% of all internet activity is dating and romance related[citation needed]. The market was worth $516 million in 2005. On many dating sites, up to one third of all profiles are fake[citation needed], thus ensuring that any user who communicates with just two other members runs a real risk of coming into contact with these scammers. Assuming just a 1% response rate, there were at least 84,000 people who each stood to lose a relatively modest $1,000. each[citation needed]. The total losses in this scenario work out to be more than $84 million, and that is in just in 2004 alone. Consider that this amount of $84 million is based on just a 1% rate - the grim reality is that the actual response rates are closer to 10% and the average losses are more than $2,500 per victim. It is not a wonder then, that email fraud is Nigeria's fifth largest 'export' and the only source of income for millions of educated but unemployed 18-45-year-olds in Nigeria. And this situation will only get worse in the future, because these huge sums of money (and the associated glamor) attract more and more people to the scamming 'industry' in a country where the average wage for a person in formal employment is between $50 and $70 per month[citation needed]. Indeed, there are thousands of reports of people leaving formal jobs to become 'yahoo-yahoo boys'[citation needed]. The Internet Crime Complaint Centre (a US government funded research organization) reported 207,449 Nigerian fraud complaints resulting in losses of $68 million in 2004 alone. These figures, however, are very conservative because many victims never report these types of crimes to the authorities[citation needed]. Many victims are too embarrassed to speak for fear that they may be arrested, the associated bureaucracy (so many forms and departments), or don't bother when they realize that the FBI cannot apprehend the Nigerian-based scammers. Taking these factors into consideration, then the $2,200,000 loss that 243 members of the Yahoo RomanceScams group reported (an average of $9,000+ per victim as of May 2006) seems to be a more accurate and reliable figure and a true indicator of the size of the problem[citation needed].

same history as the one I read in page 23
first you get an e-mail of someone interested in you, very rare (I just was trying out the dating site to search for a woman, then I never use this dating site ever again) that someone can even be interested in you when I had almost no information about myself.
then they tell you I am good, and it turns out they are in trouble in africa. There you think there is no way someone tell you that they love you and they need money, there you go you have to do your homework and thanks to the feedback from other people you verify what you were suspicious about, it was a scam.

Hi there, I met this guy from Match.com and I thought that most people who goes here are genuinely want to find someone to share their live with. Well I was fool..This guy he told me, that he went to Agege, Nigeria for a two weeks contract, accompany him is his 7 years old daughter. He somehow lost his credit card and has no way of feeding his daughter, so I was kind enough(or stupid) to send him money (lots)...Few days later same thing he was crying saying that he needed money to paid for his hotel bills and his workers otherwise they won't finish the work and he won't get paid for it...once again I was fool..just yesterday he ask if I could send him 1500 Canadian for his daughter's hospital bills, because she is in the hospital with Typhoid Fever....Oh he is smooth, he knows what he is doing....he knows how to get to a women's heart.I am a mother myself so I am a sucker for kid. People out there beware.....His name is Steven Mark this is his address in Nigeria. 45 Brown Street, Agege, Nigeria Zip code 23401..he said he lives in North York, Ontatio, Canada. his numbers in nigeria 2347036217881. he said he is a widowed...only child, parents were killed in car accident..all the soft stories..and I felt for it...his email e-mail address heart44kind@hotmail.com or heart44kind@yahoo.com
PS. Ladies beware if the man who tells you he loves you and not even met you yet..something is fishy going on...
