Another dating / chat scam - USA/ Nigeria connection

Last week I got contacted via my profile on a dating web site. The person had a temporary profile only with no picture posted and sent me a one-liner including her yahoo address and she asked me to add her on the yahoo messenger.

I was bored so I fulfilled her request.

Her profile had said she was from Illinois, USA. I live in California. Once we chat on Y! messenger, she says she just left Madrid/ Spain and is in West Africa now.

Supposedly she works for a diamond company which is owned by her step dad. She lives with her daughter since her husband (or kids father, I do not recall) left her after the kid was born. Here are her photos - I am not quite sure that they are really HER photos:

She also tells me that she is on bad terms with her step dad since he asked her for sex. (If that's her real photos, I might ask her for sex also.)
During the chat she was kind of evasive, did not answer my questions but instead asked me questions herself. After about 30 minutes she said she'd have to leave West Africa soon and wants to come to the Bay Area (which is why she had written me) and whether she could stay at my place for a week or two until she had gotten herself a place.

She wanted to see photos of my house (I mailed her two).

During the following week we briefly chatted maybe 3 times. No deep conversation, this woman does not spell well, and obviously does half a dozen chats parallel.

I asked her to visit a web site that I host so that I could trap her IP number. It was

I used two different tools (web sites) to identify the location she was coming from. Most web sites reported this IP as in London, UK. One web site located it as CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI.

If you ever want to do this kind of check, grab the IP number from email headers and use a web site like on it. You need to make your email program or web client display all headers, to see the 'Originating IP'. Yahoo's email client offers this. I do not know about AOL or hotmail.

She claims to be on AOL (which I found strange, does AOL offer service in West Africa?)

Yesterday she started talking how her step-dad does not send the money he is supposed to send. A kind of allowance instead of a paycheck. Don't ask me for an explanation of this concept.

I did not like to hear her talk about bills that she cannot pay. I'm kind of allergic to this talk when I know a person from 60 minutes of chatting only :-)

Anyway, today she asked me directly to Western Union her the money, $750. As I am posting this, I am still chatting with her. A copy of today's chat is below.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe ... She told me her name was 'Sicangu Lakota' from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe on dating site. Haaa, it's a long way from South Dakota to Nigeria. But maybe these Nigerian scammers are friends with Chief Sitting Bull on the reservation, or maybe it's just Chief Bullshit ... LOL !

This can easily be detected by having the person send you an email to your personal account. I had one from a long time ago with incorrect information because I had moved. Reading the header information - look for the IP Address following the last 'returned from' statement in the header. Put that number into any free IP Address reverse look up and you will find the emails origin. If it is anything other than where the person claims to be, you are being scammed. If the origin is Nigeria, you can look up which service provider the address came from, and report a user fraud, which the Nigerian government supposedly takes very seriously. I did this after several such contacts, and they stopped a few days after I reported them.

Yikes, so many scammers on dating websites these days... In fact, so much so, that I've been gun shy when it comes too meeting real women online. Of course meeting someone online is kind of awkward in the 1st place. Anyhow, I was using a free dating website, but I can't remember the name of it. Just keep in mind, that you can find scammers on every dating website. Most of them are from West Africa, specifically Lagos, Nigeria, and Ghana. However, there are also scammers from Russia, Asia, and even in your home country.

Unfortunately, I've met a lot of scammers online. Thankfully, I never lost any money. Nevertheless, it's emotionally draining, and can rob you of your general trust of people. Here are some telltale signs that you may be dealing with a romance scammer. I've learned a lot about these, and I haven't been fooled since I began too take notice of these signs. In fact, I can just pick out a scammers profile now. It's almost to easy, but for people like us, that would like too meet someone special, we'll often ignore these sometimes obvious signs. Anyways, I hope this helps some people.

(Signs to Lookout For):

1) Terrible use of the English language, specifically spelling errors. Also, most of them are not familiar with American, or European slang language. Often times there will be a lack of consistency when referring too themselves, or someone that they claim too know. Scammers will refer too a man as her, or she, and vice versa. The most obvious one for me, is that they rarely use the word 'I.' Read their dating profile out loud to yourself, and if it sounds like a foreigner, then it might be. I always look for sentences like 'am Jennifer, and am looking for a good man.' Think about it, as an American, we always capitalize the word 'I,' and we use it a lot. For whatever reason they do not.
2) In West Africa they use the Metric System, so when reading their profile, lookout for their height, & weight. Scammers will often list themselves as too tall, or heavy. You'll see a photo of a petite woman, but she claims too weigh over 200-400 pounds, and stand over 6-7 feet tall. This common inconsistency happens, because these scammers are unfamiliar with our measurement system for height, and weight.
3) Most of the time these scammers are teenagers, or young men in an Internet Cafe in Lagos. They're scamming multiple people, and pretending to be the opposite sex. They'll often forget too refer to themselves as the opposite sex. I've read scammer profiles, that have a photo of a woman on it, and in their profile they'll says that they're looking for a good woman.
4) They'd rather communicate on Yahoo, rather than the dating website that they met you on. They'll also have a ridiculous amount of men on their favorites list. If you examine closely, you'll find men of all ages on there. Scammers are looking for victims, so age doesn't matter.
5) There's always a melodramatic story involving the death of their parents, a sick relative, or an emergency that involves a debt that they need help with. Sometimes scammers will even pretend to be westerners that became victims of a scam, and need your financial assistance to return to the U.S. or Europe. Of course they always claim that they'll pay you back, & on top of that, pretend to be romantically interested in you. They'll ask to borrow anything from $300-$900. The golden rule to follow, is too never send $ to someone that you haven't met in person, especially if they're from West Africa, Russia, or southeast Asia. (Note): Sometimes it's a false promise of financial gain for you. The infamous inheritance, and refugee stories, are still used.
6) Scammers are usually attempting too scam multiple people online. Sometimes they're typing too multiple potential victims online, so it'll take them a long time to respond back to you. They can even mix you up with a different potential victim. For scammers that claim to live in your city. Some scammers invent their profile to target specific people. Ask them common knowledge city, but are temporarily in Nigeria, ask them questions about your city. You know, ask them questions, or make references to common knowledge places. If they live in San Diego, they should know about Balboa Park, or the baseball team. These are the kind of questions that'll make them uncomfortable. They'll likely may pretend too get disconnected, so they can Google the answers, & get back to you.
5) Lastly, scammers often use photos of models, & porn stars, that aren't that well known. Sometimes it's just random people, that they found photos of. Keep in mind, that if they look too good to be true, that they likely are. Also, some claim too be 1/2 Nigerian, and 1/2 Caucasian American, but they choose photos of people that have blond hair, light skin, and blue eyes. I remember one profile of a scammer, that chose Native American as their ethnic, or racial background, but the person in the photo looked European. To him, a Native American is probably just a normal American, and not the Native Americans that Christopher Columbus mistakenly thought were Indians from South Asia.

She is a scammer. Said she was in Texas but had to go see about her mother in Ghana. Thats a red flag right there. Google Ghana and the first thing you see is scamers. Further reading will show you the the place is a den of theives and scamers. She claims to be 37 and coming out of a bad marriage and looking for some one that is her dream person. Beware. She will ask for money and/or want you to send her a cell phone that she will want to send to you so you can send to her so you can talk by phone. Will find her name and photo on another scamer web site.
