Question: Recently my computer has been infected with various spywares. Today I find a new executable in my list of prcesses - named savroam.exe. Is this another virus and how can I remove savroam.exe?
Answer: Do you have Norton AntiVirus (Symantec AntiVirus) installed? savroam.exe belongs to their anti virus suite and offers roaming user support. savroam.exe is a core part of this suite and should not be terminated. At the time of writing (June 2005), savroam.exe is an application that does not appear to be a security risk.
Other programs that are part of Symantec Antivirus are:
- advchk.exe
- alunotify.exe
- atrack.exe
- ccapp.exe
- ccevtmgr.exe
- cctrust.dll
- cfgwiz.exe
- defwatch.exe
- iamapp.exe
- icepack.exe
- lao.exe
- n32userl.dll
- navapsvc.exe
- navapw32.exe
- navw32.exe
- ndetect.exe
- nmain.exe
- npscheck.exe
- npssvc.exe
- opscan.exe
- poproxy.exe
- rnav.exe
- rtvscan.exe
- rtvscn95.exe
- savscan.exe
- sbserv.exe
- scanexplicit.exe
- sndmon.exe
- symstore.dll
- usrprmpt.exe
- vptray.exe

some spyware like cowabanga and such, you dont need to do much and you will get them. Just open up IE and go to any legit site (that displays ads: YouTutbe, MySpace etc) and you will get them and they will never go away *(well almost).

I have found that savroam.exe was running on a system that DID NOT have any type of symantec product installed (norton AV or SAV).

Norton AntiVirus itself is worse than most spyware and virus infections. It's total junk that eats up 1/2 your system resources only to annoy the crap out of you. Only newbies use it, there are much better far less invasive programs out there. Oh this goes for Macafee too, it's just as bad.

Nortan antivirus is without doubt a biggest resource eater !
but in contrast, Symantic Antivirus is very efficient !, in consuming memory resources and detecting viruses too!

I thought Norton and Symantec are one and the same? Symantec owns Norton, no?

Indeed, the process belongs to Symantec. To get information about any process that you are curious about, refer to xraymypc.com or download their free scanner, which will show you all processes, concealed too, on your machine. You can read about each one and their security risk:
